Notes From the Sommelier

Kids love to show off. At least mine do. "Dad, watch how many times I can cap it!" Peter says as he tries to reach his "bottle flip" goal. Just the other night Victoria was demonstrating parts of her gymnastics routine, "Daddy check out my splits!" Lucas? He hasn't quite figured it out, except for his smile. He knows how to show that off and how irresistible it is. Show offs. I imagine my experience is not much different from other parents.

Claude Dugat’s children are experts at showing off as well. Claude is widely considered one of the finest winemakers in all of Burgundy and certainly the top talent in Gevrey Chambertin. With his children and wife alongside him, the family farms 15 acres of pinot noir from some of the most coveted plots in their village of Gevrey. While dad crafts the wines with the family name on it, the children craft their own wines alongside him under the label of La Gibryotte. The wines at this "micro-negociant" are crafted by Laetitia, Bertrand, and Jeanne Dugat. The fruit comes partially from family vineyards but the majority is purchased from other vineyards throughout the village. If these wines are any indication of the future of their father’s Domaine Dugat, I think his domain's "cult wine" status will be elevated to "unicorn wine" status.

Showing off tends to have a negative connotation. It is behavior that is intended to attract attention or admiration. Often enough the behavior is found to be annoying. I think it's okay for a parent to call their children show offs, considering that the very definition of a “show off” carries an implicit endorsement of someone’s capabilities. Who wouldn't endorse their own children? Of course, it’s silly of me to label the Dugat children as show offs. I’ve never met them. So I'll describe the wines as "show offs". Why? Because they most certainly behave in a manner that attracts admiration from all your senses. The complexities of each wine are annoying because you'd prefer to sit back and enjoy them. But they demand you study them. They demand your admiration. And I wholly endorse the experience they deliver. Show offs. I imagine your experience will not be much different from mine.
In good taste,
Peter

Claude Dugat Bourgogne Rouge 2013

Claude Dugat’s Bourgogne is firmer and more expressive than the Gibryotte. While the wine is paler in color, it’s richer in aromatics boasting ripe dark cherry, forest floor and subtle notes of rose water. The palate is gripping and concentrated with baked strawberry and currant notes. It’s finish is long ... more

Claude Dugat Gevrey Chambertin 2013

Claude Dugat Gevrey Chambertin 2013

This vintage of Dugat’s Gevrey is a racy, elegant style boasting raspberry, mineral and kirsch aromas. It as a compacted structure supported with firm fruit and excellent acidity to balance the wine. A polished, round core adds depth and complexity. I love the purity and “cleanliness” of this wine. It ... more
