Hendry
George Hendry is a small winegrower with a vineyard located on the bench lands between Napa's Carneros and Mt. Veeder viticulture districts. He was raised on the vineyard and has been involved in growing grapes all his life. The 120-acre Hendry Vineyard is known for producing some of the highest quality wine grapes in California. George is a highly regarded grower within the wine industry because of his commitment to quality. He regularly provides Cabernet to Opus One and is responsible for some of the most intense Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that have gone into Mondavi Reserve wines. Kent Rosenblum receives Zinefandel from the vineyard for his "Hendry Vineyard" designated bottling. Until the 1992 vintage, all of the grapes were sold to other wineries.
Hendry Ranch Winery Starting with the 1992 harvest, George Hendry started holding back small lots of fruit from his best vineyard blocks for the Hendry label. Over the past 40 years of growing grapes on the site, George has consistently observed significant differences in the wine grown in different parts of the vineyard. He attributes this to subtle differences in soil and climate, or terroir. His goal is to produce wines that reflect the terroir of the vineyard blocks in which they grow. Thus, Hendry wines are block or vineyard designated.
George Hendry, Susan Ridley, and Jeff Miller became partners in Hendry winery in 1995. The winery produces wines only from the Hendry vineyard. The first release of the Hendry label was in May of that year and consisted of approximately 500 cases of 1992 Zinfandel. Successive releases have included limited quantities of the Hendry Block 8 Cabernet Sauvignon, Hendry Blocks 9, 19, 20, and 21 Chardonnay, and Hendry Pinot Noir in addition to the block 7 and Block 28 Zinfandel. Currently, total production of all varieties is approximately 6000 cases.
Hendry believes that great wines result from a delicate balance of terroir, viticulture, and enology. The Hendry mission is to search for and improve that balance.
