print cellar notes
From young vines planted on chalky soils with limestone textures of the Terrerazo zone at Utiel, in the east of Spain, with an average density of 3500 vines per Ha.
The grapes were hand picked in small baskets, and were crushed in small wooden vats for fermentation. While fermenting, the wine was pumped twice a day, with one daily remontage. Malolactic fermentation completes in one year old french oak barrels, after which the wine ages for eight months before bottling without fining or filtration.
Wine Advocate
The 2005 Mestizaje is composed of 70% Bobal with the balance equal parts Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit comes from vines planted on chalk and limestone at high altitude in the Terrerazo zone of Utiel-Requena. Malolactic fermentation occurred in used French oak where the wine remained for an additional 6 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purple in color, the wine offers aromas of pain grille, damp earth, vanilla, black cherry, and black currant. Thick and chewy on the palate, the wine has excellent depth and concentration leading to a tannic finish. If the tannins become better integrated over the next 2-3 years, my score will appear conservative.
Score: 89.

Wine Spectator
Bold flavors of currant, cardamom and bacon are supported by bright acidity and chewy tannins in this lively red. A bit raw, but distinctive. Drink now through 2010.
