Belle Pente

Belle Pente (bell-pont') means "beautiful slope" - a perfect description for our hillside vineyard site overlooking the misty shrouds of Oregon's Coast Range mountains in the North Willamette Valley. Our inspiration comes from the exquisite wines of Burgundy and Alsace, and follows the guiding principle that great wine is made in the vineyard and merely nurtured in the winery. Our standard practices include carefully managing vineyard quality and yields, coupled with hand sorting the grapes that arrive at the winery to remove all underripe or damaged fruit. Our 3-level, gravity-flow winery is designed for gentle, natural winemaking in small lots, with minimal handling and manipulation, to produce premium wines of character and distinction.
Belle Pente is owned and operated by Jill & Brian O'Donnell. The 70 acre property is located 2 miles east of the historic town of Carlton. The vineyard and winery are on one of the oldest farms in Yamhill County, the heart of Oregon's wine country. The vineyard site rises from 240' to 500' with south, south-east, and south-west exposures. The first vineyard was planted in 1994, and now includes 16 acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. We also lease seven acres of "old vines" Pinot Noir at Murto Vineyard (est. 1978) in the Red Hills of Dundee. Our estate vineyards are supplemented with high quality fruit from carefully selected Yamhill County vineyards. The winery is open on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving Weekends, and at other times by appointment.

Complex spicy, earthy, brambly aromas lead to a fresh, focused palate dripping with medium-ripe red fruit flavors over silky, polished tannins. An absolutely classic Dundee Hills Pinot Noir! Although this wine has a youthful exuberance that makes it pretty attractive now, it should become even more interesting with a few ... more

This medium-bodied wine is a step up in concentration and complexity from our "regular" Belle Pente Vineyard bottling. It is a tightly wound, structured young wine, a bit restrained and reticent, but responds well to decanting and shows best after being open for a few days. A must for every ... more

Beautiful wine from the overshadowed 2007 vintage in Willamette Valley. Warm notes of ripe cherry and juicy, ripe apple. Lush and warm in the mouth with pronounced cherry, accented with just a touch of tobacco and gentle spice. The pundits may have raved over the 2008 vintage, but the 2007’s ... more

This 2007 version is a classically styled Chardonnay in the old world tradition. To maintain freshness and acidity, we always harvest a portion of the vineyard early, and leave the rest to achieve riper flavors, aromas, and texture. Our standard winemaking protocol includes barrel fermentation with a very small dose ... more

Muted aromas of apple and pear carry over to the ripe but focused palate, offering good weight balanced by 6 grams/liter of acidity. This is a textbook, "old school" Oregon Pinot Gris with the usual Belle Pente "enhancements". Enjoy it with whatever graces your table over the next few years. more

In 2009, the blend is primarily Murto (74%), so some of the signature Murto spiciness comes through. Ripe red fruit characteristics dominate, backed up by considerable structure and freshened with lively acidity. Moderate use of new barrels (about 1/4 of the blend) provides oak accents without overpowering the fruit.

It is a very expressive young wine with heady aromas of dark red & blue fruits, accented by herbs and woodsmoke. The palate is focused and long, medium bodied, with good underlying structure and perfect acid/tannin balance. This is a very attractive expression of the best attributes of Yamhill-Carlton Pinot. ... more

The final assemblage consisted of 18 barrels from 5 of our 8 blocks of Pinot Noir. Two thirds of the blend is from the "old school" Oregon workhorse selections of Pommard and Wadensvil (in roughly equal quantities), and the balance is comprised of Dijon 115 and 777. The finished wine ... more
