Gorgeous golden/brass color. Bright aromas of honeysuckle, Anjou pear and nutmeg spice. The palate shows more weight than expected for Alvarinho but plenty of acidity to keep it fresh and clean. Notes of banana and pineapple present themselves on a balanced mid-palate coupled with allspice finish that adds complexity.

Wine Advocate The 2005 “Auratus” is a blend of Alvarinho and Trajadura, which receives no oak. It has a steely mid-palate, with a lemon-lime note on the finish. For an inexpensive wine, and despite the steely notes, it has a remarkably rich mid-palate on first taste, with an almost oily texture that becomes most apparent on the finish. It has some persistence on the finish. As it airs out and warms up, the steel pierces that initial oily note, and the wine becomes rather penetrating and crisp, with the acidity dominant. It is a bit stern, ultimately, but if that is your style, it is a very good deal at its price. Although this can be drunk now, Summer of 2007 might be a better choice in my view, to allow it to settle down a bit. Drink now-2010. Score: 89. —Mark Squires, February 2007.
