As the bigger sibling of Woop Woop (see below) The Chook once again represents a collaboration between Ben Riggs (the wine maker at Penny's Hill), and Tony Parkinson (proprietor of Penny's Hill). The Black Chook is sourced from McLaren Vale, known for it's consistent, Mediterranean-type climate and Langhorne Creek which generally produces Shiraz that is spicy, flavorful and elegant. Co-fermenting small amounts of Viognier skins with Shiraz adds wonderful apricot perfumes, while at the same time intensifying the deep rich color and velvety mouth-feel of the wine. But enough of our techno mumbo jumbo. How’s it taste? Glorious comes to mind. Glass-staining ruby color. Big aromas of blackberry, licorice and a slight note of vanilla. Palate busting and open, with a spicy note that balances the big sweet flavors of raspberry, cherry. Round and polished, this is a winner! With the grilling season upon us...you might want to load up on this. A twist cap enclosure makes this even easier to enjoy outdoors with your favorite grilled meats and bbq. We’re going to have to list this as a SELL OUT ALERT as well. $15 and 90 points ST don’t happen often. Take advantage.

Wine Advocate

The 2008 Shiraz-Viognier spent 10 months in tank and 30% new French and American oak. This dark ruby-colored effort receives an aromatic lift from the Viognier and delivers greater depth and concentration than the Unpenned cuvee. Elegant, well-balanced, and moderately long in the finish, it will offer pleasure over the next 3-4 years.

Score: 88. —Jay Miller, December 2009.
