The vineyard is located 70 miles north of Melbourne, high up in the Mt Camel range with panoramic views in all directions. 26 acres were planted in 2001 and 2002, with a further 30 acres planted in 2004. All plantings are on 500 million year old, pre-cambrian, deep red soil. This signature soil characteristic defines the Heathcote viticultural region. Dry grown since inception, the vineyard is naturally farmed and has never been sprayed with any chemicals - no pesticide, fungicide or herbicide use. Vine rows are maintained using an undervine mower during the growing season and sheep do the job the rest of the year. 85% of the vineyard has been planted to a selection of shiraz clones, the remaining 15% being small amounts of viognier, grenache, mourvedre and tempranillo.

>From Rob and Kat McDonald:

The 2006 Lilith Shiraz is a wine of great intensity – we like to call it squid ink! However, the wine is neither fat, nor jammy and displays classic old world balance, with rich Australian fruit. The wine was fermented in small open fermenters before spending 12 months in second use french oak. Due to the slow growth of the other varieties, this – our first wine – is 100% Shiraz. Total production was 190 cases from 26 acres of 4 and 5 year old vines. The wine is youthful and tight and is best served after a hearty decanting. We have experimented at home and found the wine shows best after being open for at least 2 hours.
