Say the words “California Chardonnay” to a wine group these days and an instant style debate begins. Are CA Chardonnay’s supposed to be the big, powerful styles of the 90’s? Or the leaner, more subtle style of the early 00’s? We believe there’s a place for both. As for that big powerful style of the 90’s that seemed to have gone the way of the doodoo? Well, they’re back and they are retro! Start here with the Freeman Vineyards “Ryo Fu” Chardonnay. Founded in 2001 by Ken and Akiko Freeman, the winery has quickly developed a cult following among Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lovers alike. “Ryo Fu” is Japanese for “cool breeze”. The wine is given the name because of it’s cool climate origins. We’ll warn you, this Chardonnay is truly retro CA. Be prepared. Big, bold and beautiful. Layer upon layer of rich apple and pear fruit that is enhanced by notes of popcorn, clarified butter, pineapple and toasty oak. The palate continues the assault on the senses with big weight and texture that leads to a long creamy finish. There is plenty of balance here. Pair with salmon, tuna, grill roasted chicken, lobster risotto, or just plain lobster. Drink soon, the wine won’t cellar much past the end of 2011.
Wine Advocate
The lovely 2007 Chardonnay Ryo-Fu reveals beautiful aromas of white peaches, tropical fruits, cold steel, and brioche. Subtle, rich, medium to full-bodied, pure, and textured with lively acidity, this impressive white wine should be enjoyed over the next 3-5 years.
Score: 92. —Robert Parker, February 2010.Wine Spectator
Sleek, intense and focused on a core of citrus-laced tangerine, green apple and nectarine flavors that are pure and persistent. Drink now through 2015.
