Fontezoppa is located between the towns of Serrapetrona and San Severino, considered to be one of the best spots to grow grapes in the Marche region of Italy. Marche is not as well known a wine-producing region as neighboring Tuscany to the west, but is now coming into its own. This part of Italy was, until the 1960’s, relatively poor compared to the rest of the peninsula, and happens to have been home to Cesare Mondavi before he immigrated to the United States in 1906. Winemaker and owner Giovanni Basso, with 20 years of experience under his belt, tends to 25 year old vines grown between 500-600 meters above sea level, very close to the Adriatic Sea, in an area that benefits from cool sea breezes. This Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Merlot (10%). The wine is fermented in stainless steel, followed by a period of refining in the tanks for 3 months. It is then aged in oak casks for 12 months before release. Dark ruby red with violet reflections. Notes of red wild berries on the nose with hints of violets, roses, carnations and tobacco. A dry and enveloping flavor, with a nice freshness. Velvety tannin on the palate. Smooth and well poised with a long finish.
