The Ferraton Crozes Hermitage is a very special find. So special that we made sure you can only get it in one place. Only 30 cases were imported in CT and we bought the lot. Why? Because we are sure that once you try this 100% Syrah, you’ll want more. Need more convincing? What if we told you that the vineyards are owned and maintained by Michel Chapoutier, perhaps one of the greatest Rhone producers, and that Robert Parker loves the wine and suggests it should sell as a $30 bottle? Grown in the Crozes Hermitage district of the Rhone Valley in France, the 2007 “La Matiniere” displays intense cherry red color. The aromas jump from the glass with lively, licorice, spice, raspberry, and currant. On the palate the wine is soft with medium weight, luscious texture and long, smooth finish with round tannins. Perhaps your holiday dinner focuses on turkey or ham. Or perhaps a few pasta dishes and a little fish. If so, the Ferraton is a delightful match and quite a steal at $17 per bottle. The wine also plays nice with soft cheeses, but don’t choose anything too stinky please, otherwise you won’t taste the wine!

Wine Spectator

A fresh, tangy style, with bright acidity running through the iron, red cherry and lavender notes, followed by a long, supple finish. Drink now through 2010.

Score: 89. —James Molesworth, July 31, 2009.

Wine Advocate

The crisp, tart, fresh, lively, licorice, bouquet garni, spice, raspberry and strawberry-scented 2007 Crozes-Hermitage La Matiniere is medium-weight, and slightly lighter than the 2006.

Score: 88. —Robert Parker, April 2009.
