From mechanical engineer to brewer to winemaker, Ben Smith’s path isn’t exactly typical. In 1986, Ben moved to Seattle to take a job with Boeing. Over the next 14 years he developed a fascination with fermentation, eventually falling in love with wine. After winning the Boeing winemaking competition several years in a row, he volunteered with Andrew Will Winery for the 1994 through 1997 vintages. He started his own operation, Cadence Winery, in 1998.

Ben and his wife Gaye do all the wine making together, using fruit from Red Mountain, Washington State’s premier AVA. Cadence Winery has received consistently excellent reviews since it’s 2002 vintage. Of note is its inclusion in the top 100 reasons the editors of Food and Wine magazine love wine.

The 2008 Coda is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot aged in 45% new oak for 14 months.

Wine Advocate

The 2008 Coda is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot aged in 45% new oak for 14 months. Medium ruby-colored, it displays aromas of cedar, spice box, violets, black currant and blackberry. Medium to full-bodied, spicy, and ripe on the palate, it has enough underlying structure to evolve for 1-2 years. This medium-long effort will provide pleasurable drinking through 2018.
