This wines mysterical journey began with the 1984 vintage and Doon followers have been anxiously awaiting the release of each new vintage. Its winemaker Randall Grahm's hommage to the famous wines from Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2007 is a particularly strong vintage that saw favorable growing conditions. 60% grenache, 31% syrah,
5% mourvèdre, 4% cinsault from the Central Coast in California. You can study the nose on this wine for hours and mystify yourself with the nuances that develop over time. Classic style with aphotic fruit, black pepper that's forward but it develops an herbal/floral component with time. Like a CDP prince marrying a Cornas pauper, each has something dark and sinister but each brings so much flavor to the table.

Wine Advocate

The 2007 regular bottling, the Le Cigare Volant (Normale), is almost Burgundian in its floral, black cherry, plum, and foresty notes. The wine is round, medium-bodied, elegant, and should drink nicely for 4-6 years.

Score: 89. —Robert Parker, August 2010.
