This Month's Feature

The Loire Valley might be the most picturesque wine region in all of France. The incredible Chateaux, gorgeous vegetation and rolling hills create a painting of a million colors for the eyes to feast on. The region is steeped in winemaking tradition and is most famous for the wines of Sancerre, Muscadet and Vouvray. However, the Loire valley is quite large, spanning 170 miles, so its wines can vary quite a bit. In the west against the Atlantic Ocean practically surrounding the city of Nantes you’ll find the crisp, saline whites of Muscadet produced with the melon de bourgogne grape. To the east you’ll find Sancerre producing seductive, medium bodied sauvignon blancs. They are, quite possibly, the most popular wines from the Loire Valley. In the central regions is where the fun really begins. Here you have Chinon producing beautifully reds from cabernet franc and gorgeous whites from the chenin blanc grape. The Bourgeuil region produces some of the funkest cabernet franc you’ll ever experience. And then there’s the downright sexy white wines of the Vouray made with chenin blanc.

Sometimes, in a wine region that produces such a wide array of styles from what seems like a thousand regions, some simple, basic, and delicious wines get lost in the shuffle. It’s in these regions where you can find real bargains. Take the region of Touraine, it surrounds the city of Tours sprawling about 20 miles to the east and west and about 5 miles north and south. Sauvignon Blanc from this region can be very good and it can be so-so. When you find the very good, you’ve got yourself a bargain. And we’ve found one. If you have a taste for Sancerre but it is, perhaps, a stretch for your weekday wine, give the Domaine Grand Moulin a try.
