It’s always a pleasure to find wines like the 2006 Vallana Gattinara available in the marketplace. The Vallana family has been farming the property since 1937. It is located in northern Piedmont at the base of the Alps, at the foot of Monte Rosa, where the Mediterranean and Continental climates meet. The wines crafted here take on a charming and highly aromatic character. The regions soils have a high acidic content, rather than the alkaline soils of the Langhe, giving the wine its acid backbone and ultimately the structure and character that add to the age ability. These vineyard sites are on gently sloping terraces along the left bank of the river Sesia and Lake Maggiore. Vallana owns vineyard sites within Colline Novaresi including the 2 important crus of Boca and Gattinara.

The 2006 Vallana Gattinara offers the rare opportunity to experience a wine that is a decade old. It’s not something we had to buy and hold for 10 years, rather, someone did that for us. As I thought about that, I thought about what was happening in 2006. Then I googled it. Woof, what a year. I mean, it was the year that brought us Twitter and hashtags like #tbt. So for #tbt I’m throwing back to the year 2006, when Twitter was launched and this gorgeous bottle of nebbiolo from Italy was created.

“A powerful, tannic wine, the 2006 Gattinara exudes class, depth and also a good bit of nuance as well. Sweet tobacco, game, licorice, leather, mint, star anise and exotic spices meld into a core of pliant red stone fruits. The aromatics are just starting to open up, but there is more than enough depth and underlying tannin to allow the 2006 to drink well for another decade or more. This is a fabulous bottle.”
