In 1987, French insurance giant AXA continued their vineyard purchasing spree by acquiring Domaine de L’Arlot. The company immediately installed Christian Seely as managing director and the very talented Jean Pierre de Smet as winemaker. Their first step was to replant almost the entire vineyard, the health of which had badly deteriorated. This crucial decision reaped rewards with the 1991 vintage which is recognized as the pivot point in the domaine’s reputation. It also happens to be the year they were able to buy a small parcel of Romanée St Vivant and adding some Vosne Romanée Les Suchots the following year brought the domaine’s total parcels owned to 14 hectares.

In 1998, Olivier Leriche joined the team as “stagière” under Jean-Pierre. Together they installed biodynamic farming techniques in parts of the vineyards in 2000 and by 2006, the entire holdings were being farmed biodynamically. Later that year, Leriche was hired full time and Jean-Pierre retired – no doubt to rekindle his passion for skiing and long-distance yachting. Leriche continued the “house style” developed by Jean-Pierre and today led by technical director Géraldine Godot.

The wines from Domaine de L’Arlot are best described using the two Bs, beauty and balance. In which case the wines they produce from Nuits St. George can be an anomaly. Those looking for the broad shouldered, bruised hand style of classic Nuits St. George will find the wines more perfumed and light bodied. If you’re a purist, they won’t appeal to you. I’m an experimentalist. I’ll drink anything so long as it tastes good. And then I’ll form an opinion. In the case of Domaine de L’Arlot, I’ll buy it every vintage and drink it whenever I can. It’s a staple for any Burgundy collection.
