She looked at me with a smile that I wasn’t accustomed to from a woman of her age. I was still a college kid. She must have been 35 or 36. I was sitting, alone, at an osteria in the Canavese hills in the eastern part of Piemonte. I struggled with my Italian. Should I say “caffè bianco con zucchero per favore?” or “per favore, caffè con crema e zucchero.” She said “Caluso Erbaluce, prego.” And then the smile. A smile that ended the summer of my youth.

2013 Orsolani La Rustica Erbaluce di Caluso – Lovely shades of pale sunshine with a perfume of fresh picked sage followed by an enticing palate of fresh pear and a persistent and savory finish of minerals and spice. Perfect with roasted, small flake fish and grilled fresh vegetables direct from her the garden. An end of the summer treat. Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Award Winner
