I’ve had the pleasure of talking to winemaker Chris Williams twice during my time here at Nicholas Roberts. His love of winemaking and the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon are evident in his every word. His approach is simple: let the land speak through the fruit of the vines that grow in it. Chris had been at Brooks Winery since 2004 and has become, in our view, one of Oregon’s top wine stars.

The true test of any great winemaker is making great wine in not-so-great vintages. And with the 2010 Brooks Winery Rastaban Pinot Noir, Chris did just that. Described as a “nail biting” vintage by Stephen Tanzer, 2010 was an exceptionally cool vintage, even for Oregon. But Chris rose to the challenge, producing a wine that Tanzer has scored higher than both 2009 and 2011.

2010 Brooks Winery Rastaban Pinot Noir
$60 the bottle
Chris names this wine after a star that makes one of the “eyes” of the Draco constellation in the Northern sky. The grapes come solely from the Brooks estate vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. The wine is expressive showing beautiful red fruit aromas mingled with spices and cola. The wine starts fairly focus, then broadly coats the palate with raspberry and chocolate-cherry flavors and a touch of slatey, smokey earth. It lingers with a touch of spice on the long and lovely on the finish.
