La Colombina

La Colombina, which borders both the Ciacci estate and the Uccelliera estate in the warm southeastern Castelnuovo dell'Abate district of Montalcino, has been in the Caselli family for generations. The superior location of the estate is immediately evident in the ripe, powerful fruit on the nose, with an underlying intensity and weight that is typical of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, making wines such as those of Ciacci and Uccelliera so compelling and long-lived.

Wine Spectator

This is definitely on the tar, wild herb and savory side of the flavor spectrum, yet there's an innate fruity sweetness that evokes cherry. Firms up on the finish, yet shows fine length and energy. Best from 2013 through 2026. 1,250 cases made.

Score: 92. —Bruce Sanderson, August 31, 2011.

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is an attractive, mid-weight wine laced with dried cherries, dried flowers, sweet herbs and worn-in leather. This is another of the more feminine wines of the vintage. Still, the balance and sense of harmony are first-rate. Sweet, floral notes and a dash of French oak add a touch of depth and richness to the finish. This is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.

Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni, May 2011.

James Suckling

What a nose! Shows white truffles, dried fruits such as currants and apricots. Full body, with round and chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Very intense ripe style, but I really find the toffee and citrus character fascinating under the prune and berries. Some tobacco too. Give it three to four years of bottle age.

Score: 91. January 15, 2011.

Wine Enthusiast

There’s a smoky, meaty quality here with mature fruit, cola, mesquite and cured meat nuances in the background. La Colombina boasts impressive intensity and lingering spice flavors.

Score: 91. —Monica Larner, April 01, 2011.
