Driven by a passion to make world class Pinot Noir, Dick and Nancy Ponzi purchased a small, 20-acre plot just southwest of Portland, Oregon. Most thought that the Pacific Northwest was not ideally suited to Pinot Noir, but the Ponzi’s recognized the northern Willamette Valley’s cool-climate was perfect for Burgundian varieties. The two forged ahead with their dream and Ponzi Vineyards was founded in 1970.

Forty years later, with winemaking in the hands of second generation Luisa Pozni, they continue to strike a balance between innovation and tradition. Gentle winemaking and deep respect for varietal integrity lie at the heart of Ponzi’s winemaking. Their winery is sustainable, four-level gravity flow facility, and is one of the first in Oregon awarded the LIVE Winery Certification.

Fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, not exceeding 55˚F. 50% malolactic fermentation occurred to expand inherent flavors and texture. Stelvin closures (screwcaps) were used on 100% of the production. This wine was lightly filtered just before bottling.

“A floral nose with lime zest and green apple, the mouth is ripe melon, clove and citrus finishing with a perfect play between sweetness and acidity.” - Winemaker Luisa Ponzi

Wine Enthusiast

Strikingly spicy, with the scents and flavors of Bosch pears, this textural, racy wine has a bit of refreshing effervescence as well. Subtle traces of citrus, pineapple and Asian pear are woven through, and the bracing acidity sets it up well for richly sauced poultry or pasta dishes.

Score: 90. —Paul Gregutt, October 01, 2010.

Wine Spectator

Bright and lively, brimming with grapefruit-scented pear and floral flavors, lingering easily on the slightly sappy finish.

Score: 89. —Harvey Steiman, August 31, 2010.

Wine Advocate

Ponzi Vineyards makes a wide range of other wines that fall outside the purview of this report. I tasted the following, but no tasting notes are given.

Score: 88. —Jay Miller, October 2010.
