Montagny, to the south of the Cote Chalonnaise, is the one all-white appellation within Burgundy and includes neighboring Buxy, whose co-operative is the most successful in southern Burgundy. Located in the southernmost tip of the Cote Challonaise, the vineyards of Montagny are nestled between those of Macon further south, and the Cote d'Or further north. Charles du Besset, owner of the Chateau Cary-Potet, is one of a new generation of winemakers in Montagny who have been separating their vineyards into smaller parcels based on soil type, reducing yields, and vinifying the wines to acheive the best expression of terroir. This is NOT a Puligny Montrachet so don’t expect round, bold, weight. The Montagny is seemless and streamlined on the palate with excellent tropical fruit and bracing acidity. Think Chablis light. Grilled pork loin with a mustard cream sauce, seared tuna and sushi all play nice. Drink now through 2012.
