Cantine “Francesco Montagna” was among the first wine producing companies to be established in the Oltrepò Pavese region of Italy. The Montagna estate boasts more than a century of history in the ancient village of Broni. Since 1895 it has been producing wine with increasing expertise. The Oltrepo Pavese region is Lombardia’s largest viticulture region, but is administratively part of Piedmont. Produced with the Bonarda grape (or Croatina depending who you ask), the wine is a traditional red from the region. Deep ruby-red color. Strong bouquet that recalls violets, cherries and, to a small extent, wild berries. The taste is full and lively with excellent texture that is polished and round. Ripened tannins add structure and backbone but do not interfere with the wine’s expression of fruit. This wine screams charcuturie! It will also pair nicely with pasta dressed with a cream sauce, grilled quail or smoked sausages. While lively and playful in it’s youth, the wine will develop texture as it ages. Drink now through 2015.
