This Barolo has soon asserted its first rate class. It is characterized by a rich bouquet with persistent scents and by an intense ruby red color. Its flavor is complete and well balanced.
The Wine Spectator
Incredibly rich, with loads of ripe fruit followed by lots of flamboyant new wood. Then it turns to crushed berries. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a fantastic finish. Named after the tiny chapel that crowns the Santo Stefano di Perno vineyard near Monforte d'Alba. Best after 2008. 1,510 cases made.
Score: 95.
The Wine Advocate
The 2000 Barolo Cappella di Santo Stefano is easily the most concentrated of the trio here and, unsurprisingly, also the wine which best expresses the classic tar, licorice, and floral character of Nebbiolo. Very powerful and firm and with an impressive tannic richness on the mid-palate and finish, it will provide much pleasure until 2020.
Score: 94.
International Wine Cellar
Good full red. Roasted, exotic aromas of plum, cherry and tar. Plump and lush in the mouth; as it did two years ago from barrel, this comes across as seductively sweet, even exotic. Finishes with very suave tannins that arrive late. A big success for the year.
Score: 92.
